November is National Healthy Skin Month

Kevin G with National Healthy Skin Month

A Note from Kevin Giacontiere, PA

It’s suddenly winter once again and the cold temperatures mean lower humidity and dry skin. Moisturizers provide one of the most important barriers that protect the Stratum Corneum (top layer of skin), which contains about 30 percent water. It’s important to maintain that level of hydration for our skin to look and feel its best. Proper hydration and daily moisturizers can maintain a healthy glow and improve overall appearance of skin texture.

Choosing a good moisturizer can be confusing. We are here to help at Tru-Skin Dermatology. When shopping for a moisturizer, keep in mind that there are many types of moisturizers which contain very different ingredients and are designed to be used for a specific location such as face or body.

Moisturizers for the face can often be used on the body; however, be careful in using body moisturizers on the face. They are typically much heavier and contain more oils or plant derivatives that can cause irritation or breakouts on the face. Some moisturizers are humectants, meaning they draw moisture from the air, while others are emollients, which provide protection from water loss in the skin. Keep an eye out for moisturizers that contain lanolin – it can irritate sensitive skin. As comfortable as it might feel in the cold weather, avoiding very hot showers is best for your skin. It will leave the skin dry and irritated over time.
Eczema patients are more prone to staph aureus infections. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, studies show that adding small amounts of bleach can improve eczema.

As a rule, I often recommend Cetaphil or Cerave lotion with a sunscreen to my patients for use on the face, and Cetaphil or Eucerin creams for the body. Especially during the Winter months. These products contain limited ingredients and zero fragrance, so they are appropriate for all skin types and provide a great barrier to maintain skin hydration. They are very inexpensive and work just as well as some of the big department store fancy lotions which can cost much more and offer just as much benefit.

We do offer a great alternative at Tru-Skin called Triple Lipid Restore made by SkinCeuticals – it’s great for head to toe moisturizing and is budget friendly.

The menagerie of moisturizers can be overwhelming to most patients, but our providers at Tru-Skin Dermatology are always happy to answer any questions and often have many samples of different products for you to try. We are all here to keep you looking your best. Contact us for an appointment or if you have any questions about how to keep your skin looking and feeling healthy.
