What Is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects millions of people nationwide. Individuals with psoriasis have overactive skin cells that grow too rapidly and cause flaky, red, and silver-looking patches on the skin. Outbreaks of these patches vary in size and can appear anywhere on the body but are most commonly found on the elbows, knees, hands, scalp, and lower back.

What Causes Psoriasis?

Like many autoimmune diseases, doctors and researchers have not been able to determine the exact cause of psoriasis. The common belief is that an overactive immune system which causes rapid skin regeneration is the root cause of the condition, and it is also believed that it is often inherited from family. In addition, there are also environmental triggers such as:

  • Stress
  • Medications
  • Infections such as Strep Throat, skin infections or common cold
  • Cold, dry weather
  • Skin injuries such as cuts, scrapes, bug bites or severe sunburns

Symptoms of Psoriasis

The appearance of symptoms can vary from person to person, depending on the type of psoriasis they have. The important thing to remember is that psoriasis is not contagious, so there is no concern about it spreading by contact. Problems for patients with any type of psoriasis include itchy or scratchy skin, possible bleeding from irritation and flare-ups, and low self-esteem due to skin blemishes. Symptoms can include:

  • Red patches with thick silvery scales
  • Small red scaling patches
  • Dry, cracked skin that can bleed, itch, or burns
  • Bright red, smooth, red patches that look raw in appearance from skin rubbing on skin such as in the armpits, buttocks, or thighs
  • Thickened, pitted nails
  • Stiff, swollen joints

How To Treat Psoriasis

While there is no cure for psoriasis, our team offers patients treatment options to help relieve the discomfort of itchy scales, the frequency and size of flare-ups, and the embarrassment of this common skin condition. Our goal is to provide patients with as much relief as possible and limit psoriasis from affecting their quality of life. Treatment options may include:

  • Shampoos and Oils – These help patients with psoriasis affecting the scalp.
  • Mild Cases – Prescription lotions, creams, and ointments are available.
  • Moderate to Severe Cases – Medications and prescription drugs are taken orally or injected can work throughout the entire body. Severe cases in patients who have not responded to other treatments may receive intravenous biologic drug treatment.
