What Is a Chemical Peel? Do Skin Peeling Treatments Hurt?

Chemical peels use special acid formulas to dissolve the outermost layer of your skin cells to reveal the fresher, younger-looking layer of skin below. Various types of chemical peels are available at Tru-Skin Dermatology, ranging from light to moderate and deep, depending on your needs. Thanks to chemical peels, many patients can minimize the appearance of age spots, acne, uneven skin tones, mild scarring, and sun damage. Results may last anywhere from 1-3 months or longer, depending on your skin type and the issue being treated.

While usually used on the face, chemical peels are also used on the neck, back, hands, and upper chest. Many of our patients have face peels done once every 4-6 weeks as part of their beauty regimen. Most patients only experience minor discomfort, similar to a sunburn with a stinging or burning sensation. Mild to moderate redness, skin sensitivity, and peeling are other common side effects. Using a gentle cleanser or hydrating serum can reduce dryness or irritation.

What Can I Expect During My Dermaplaning Treatment?

If you’re looking for an exfoliation treatment yielding superior results, you can’t go wrong with dermaplaning. This treatment involves gently removing microscopic layers of dead skin cells and “peach fuzz” from your epidermal layer of skin. Patient discomfort during a dermaplaning treatment is minimal. Many patients describe it as feeling like a slightly rough facial scrub, experiencing mild redness for a few days afterward. Treatments take 45-50 minutes per session, with many of our patients coming in for a new treatment every 4-8 weeks as part of their beauty regimen. Results are cumulative, meaning you should notice additional improvements after each dermaplaning treatment. They’re virtually painless and are used to treat both the face and neck to make them appear smoother and more even-toned.

What Is Fraxel® Laser Treatment Used to Correct?

Patients with uneven skin pigmentation from age or sunspots, excessive wrinkles and fine lines, acne or surgical scars, or stretch marks may benefit from Fraxel® laser treatment. This state-of-the-art skin resurfacing laser treatment is safe and effective for men and women of all ages. The name “Fraxel®” comes from the terms “fraction” and “pixel” in reference to how the treatment works. Your skin is resurfaced fractionally, using pinpoint lasers referred to as pixels. You may experience a warm, prickling sensation during treatment, but we apply a topical anesthetic first to minimize any discomfort or pain. Recovery takes about a week, during which time you may notice skin sensitivity similar to a sunburn and dry, flaky skin as you pave the way for new, healthier skin. It may take up to six sessions for the best results.

How Is an IPL Photofacial Different from a Regular Facial?

IPL photofacials utilize advanced fluorescent technology (AFT) pulsed light to rejuvenate or restore your skin. This non-invasive procedure harnesses the power of high-intensity light pulses to correct wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, rosacea, and many other skin blemishes and imperfections. IPL treatment for pigmentation issues produces superior results for many patients. You should notice smoother skin with more even skin tones and minimized pore sizes in just 3-5 treatments. IPL facials are suitable for many skin types, although it isn’t recommended for anyone with melasma. Our dermatologists will determine if this type of treatment is right for you during your initial skin consultation.

What Should I Expect During Microdermabrasion Treatment?

Microdermabrasion facials have been around since the mid-1980s and are used to exfoliate the skin and minimize the appearance of wrinkles and scarring. Prior to your microdermabrasion treatment, the treated areas will be gently cleansed and prepped. The microdermabrasion machine removes dead skin cells similar to how a vacuum operates. You will likely feel some suction and the sensation of tiny crystals gliding over your skin during treatment, which many patients have described as feeling slightly rougher than a facial scrub. Afterward, we’ll apply a soothing serum and a protective sunscreen to your face. Microdermabrasion treatments take about 45-50 minutes, making them ideal for patients looking for an effective way to refresh their appearance with minimal downtime. You may notice mild redness, skin sensitivity for a few days, or acne breakouts, but these should subside quickly.

What Should I Expect from SkinPen® Microneedling Treatment?

Are you looking for ways to improve the appearance of dull-looking skin, large pores, acne scarring, or stretch marks? Women and men of all ages benefit from SkinPen® microneedling treatment at Tru-Skin Dermatology. Most microneedling sessions take about an hour and may be repeated every 4-6 weeks to begin with and then once every 3-6 months as part of your ongoing beauty regimen. Microneedling is used to treat the face, neck, upper chest, hands, or any area of the body. We gently cleanse the area being treated and apply a numbing cream prior to treatment to minimize patient discomfort.

The SkinPen® microneedling device is a handheld roller with tiny needles that only slightly penetrate your skin. The device creates micro-wounds, which promote your skin’s natural healing process to produce new collagen for healthier, glowing skin. The most common side effects include redness, light peeling, and skin sensitivity similar to a sunburn for a few days after treatment. We recommend using hydrating serums or moisturizers to minimize your discomfort. Tru-Skin Dermatology offers three types of SkinPen® microneedling treatments to customize treatment plans for every patient’s needs.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for a Perfect Derma Peel?

The Perfect Derma Peel is a medium-depth skin peel used to remove your skin’s outermost layers for a brighter, fresher skin complexion. Cellular turnover stimulates new collagen production and helps many patients minimize the appearance of acne, age spots, fine lines, melasma, and acne scarring. The Perfect Derma Peel is applied in less than 30 minutes, making it perfect for patients on the go. You’ll be sent home with detailed aftercare instructions for optimal results and minimal discomfort. Treatment is safe for patients of all skin types and ethnicities, although it is not recommended for patients who are pregnant or nursing. Depending on your specific skin issue, you may wish to be treated every 4-6 weeks until you reach your desired results. Perfect Derma Peel results typically last 2-5 months or longer.

Are Skin Tightening Procedures Painful? How Do They Work?

Stress and hormonal changes can cause loss of skin elasticity and sagging skin in many areas as you age. If you could use neck or face tightening, Tru-Skin Dermatology offers non-invasive skin tightening procedures. Ideal for men and women of all skin types, our skin tightening facials and procedures utilize near-infrared light pulses to create micro-thermal injuries in the skin’s dermal layer. These micro-thermal wounds don’t hurt, but they promote new collagen and elastin production to reduce the effects of aging. You’ll experience warm pulses and gradually building heat during treatment.

Skin tightening procedures minimize the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and more for firmer, healthier-looking skin in no time. After treatment, the most common side effects include redness, swelling, or peeling, though most patients experience little to no downtime. You may notice your skin feeling tighter almost immediately, but most collagen and elastin formations take about 2-3 weeks. We generally recommend 6-9 treatments spaced 3-4 weeks apart for the best results. Results may last up to 6-12 months or longer, but this will vary by patient, skin type, and the skin conditions being treated.

How Is a VI Peel Different from Other Types of Face Peels?

The VI Peel is a medium-depth skin peel that uses five different acids to safely remove the outermost layers of your skin to reveal a brighter, fresher complexion. What makes the VI Peel unique from other face peels is you should notice an almost immediate difference in your skin tone or texture. VI Peels are often used to improve skin tone, texture, or clarity or to soften the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, freckles, acne, or hyperpigmentation caused by melasma and other skin conditions.

VI Peels take about 45-50 minutes with sessions spaced about 4-6 weeks apart for the best results. Peeling afterward may last up to seven days, but your skin should heal quickly for minimal downtime or discomfort. Trying to differentiate between the types of chemical peels available can be challenging, but Tru-Skin Dermatology’s providers would be happy to help you select the best one for your needs.
